It's kind of funny, but this is the first time it's ever occurred to me to suggest that Benevolance and I have characters that are a 'couple.' With our last campaign in this setting, it was designed that we were all kind of army brats who had grown up together, but that was more directed by the campaign setting than anything else.

I've heard so many good things about the Dresden Files RPG it makes me really curious to try it out one day. However, I don't think that our Sunday night gamers would be the best fit for that type of RPG. Our current system is with Cortex rules and their plot points function like fate points do. Makes it much more fun as a player if you can exert a little influence over the direction of the game.

I love building character backgrounds together. It's one of the best things about being married to a gamer, though it does backfire sometimes. In times of boredom, Morgan and I have put together more character duos than we're likely to ever have a chance to play. But it's fun. As a DM, I like to give XP bonuses to people who write up a backstory for me, and I'll give extra if multiple players work together a history.

Collaborative creation is one of the things I really like about the FATE systems, like Spirits of the Century or the Dresden Files RPG. Any system that makes characters work together from the very beginning is good in my book.

Already really looking forward to it! We're building a list of things we'll probably be looking at buying when we're down there. I guess we're getting B's turn this year. This is the first time in several years where we've actually made it down there.

I would love to spend a night away from home, but it isn't really feasible yet. Right now, I'd like to plan at least one every season, so maybe a getaway retreat will be in the cards soon. It'll definitely be a test to keep the technology from encroaching though. I think I'll actually unplug the phone and the modem. I might need to turn on a computer if I want to listen to any music, since I think all of our music players are digital. But I could probably get by without any music for a day. I'll try to post an update after the retreat.

I once took a retreat to a hermitage at a retreat centre. I was in high school at the time! My parents thought I was crazy. But it was amazing. I had the hermitage overnight and spent the time wandering the grounds and journalling. I also met a wonderful woman who was staying at another hermitage on the grounds. I highly recommend taking a night somewhere away from home as the technology and demands are just too tempting if you stay. I can't wait to hear how yours goes!

They have a bunch of hotels all around. We aren't sure yet if we're going to try to book at the same hotels that our friends are staying at, or if we're going to pick one of the ones closest to the convention centre. But, all of the parking at the hotels is similarly ridiculously over-priced. Might try to figure out if a nearby parkade would be cheaper. If we can manage 3 weeks in Japan with only 1 carry-on bag each, I'm sure we won't have a lot of luggage to carry with us to the hotel, so that won't be a problem.

On previous trips to Seattle I've stayed at the Red Lion. Its right near the convention centre and not quite as expensive as some of the other ones in the area. I recommend it. It is expensive to park there though. If you don't have many bags I recommend leaving a car in an over night parkade near there. Then you don't have to deal with the hotel parking lot.
