The Imperium operates under a Feudal system, wherein lands and titles are granted by the Crown.

The primary factor for consideration among the Peers is a demonstration of suitable arcane lineage. As membership and lands are quite limited within the borders of the Imperium, promotion to the Peerage typically requires ouster of an incumbent. The result is a frightening political landscape of intrigue, maneuvering, and frequent assassination. All among the Peerage are wizards of the highest order. The ranks of peerage in descending order are: Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron.

Those arcanists yet unable to secure membership among the Peerage typically seek a military command, honing their arcane and leadership skills on the field of battle. Young arcanists often pledge loyalty to a particular Lord or Lady, in the hopes of both securing a protector and in eventually ousting their mentor. In exchange, some particularly adept magi may be granted the title of Knight and given small estates to manage.

Those of elven descent who demonstrate common blood (that is, lacking in magical talents), the only options available to them are those of trade and warfare. These specimens are pitiously viewed as genetic dead-ends and are not considered true elves. Such elves are dubbed ‘Mules’.

Military organization: Under the Feudal system, the Lords and Ladies are under contract to raise Knights and troops for the royal army. Elves generally prefer to let others wage war, be it undead, constructs or transmuted magical creations, directed under the auspices of elven casters from afar.

For Mules, however, service in the military is a viable life choice. These regiments of arcane rangers favour fast movement and hit-and-run tactics, using stealth and cunning to overcome larger forces. They rarely engage an army on equal terms.

Special forces: The Empress maintains her own private champions, The Knights of Loran (a.k.a. Deathknights). Also, see Ratlings, below.

Intelligence: The elves have no formal intelligence service. Instead, all members of the Peerage are assumed (and expected) to spy on each other and gather intelligence by various means. Few elven Peers have interest in the greater world beyond their borders.

Factoid: Although it is widely believed that the loss of the undead armies was key to halting the Elven advance during the Great War, the truth was far more simple: it was the sudden and widespread vacancies in the Peerage wrought by the Readers of Moradin that brought about the ceasefire, as the undead Lords and Ladies lost interest in the war and instead focused their machinations inward towards elevating social status.

Official languages: Elven Leadership: Empress Victoria, the Undying Overview: The Elven Imperium (also known as the Undying Empire or the Victorian Empire) is an unusual experiment in meritocritous monarchy.
